As REF Director at Bath, I prepared the School of Management’s submission to REF 2021: selecting outputs, developing and evidencing the impact cases, and writing the environment statement. I chaired the School’s REF Committee and set up an Impact and Engagement fund, open to all faculty, which supported over thirty projects. The School finished seventh among UK business and management schools by grade point average, up from eighth in 2014. I became an expert in all things REF, and I am still trying to recover.
At Imperial, I was Research Director of the UK Innovation Research Centre, a collaboration between the Centre for Business Research at Cambridge and Imperial College London funded by the ESRC, BIS, NESTA and the Technology Strategy Board. Its research led to several REF impact cases and fed into the UK government’s innovation strategy and comprehensive spending review; it ran annual Innovation Summits for policy makers, academics and practitioners, and paper development workshops for early career researchers. I was also co-director of the Innovation Studies Centre, which grew out of the Built Environment Innovation Centre around 2007, funded by the EPSRC for eight years, and led its theme on open and distributed innovation.
